Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 19

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

In the previous session character's situation became a bit complicated because, chased by giant rats eager for fresh meat (surely more tasty than the rotenness of the orc's pantry they were eating), they were forced to take refuge in a pretty small cell were two skinny prisoners and the corpses of other prisoners dead time ago were locked.

Seeing that the cell's door won't stand the group decided to go out and and face the filthy beasts and it was in this moment, after a few combat moments, when Flynn appeared (the character of Irene, the new player joining the campaign), a courageous young man dressed with the clothes and accoutrements identifying him as a cleric follower of Valion, the solar deity and benefactor par excellence of the game universe of the East Mark, who helped them to finish the rats without too much hassle.

After the proper presentation young Flynn helped characters using his skills and healing knowledge to heal wounds and explained them how he reached this unknown place (and players again got some fun joking about a certain giant fork, a fact that is becoming a rule in the gaming sessions of the campaign 😉).

Once recovered they talked with the prisoners who said they were part of a mercenary group hired by clerics of Penumbra to protect them from the dangers of inside the mountain, discovering too late that the intention of the clerics was to wake up an unknown creature locked up in the bottom of the volcano from very ancient times. The chief of the mercenary company ordered his men to leave the island in secret as soon as possible, but they were captured and don't know about the fate of their commander, they also explained that don't know how many enemies were on the lower levels of the volcano but undoubtly their forces grew day after day, and to scare away onlookers the acolytes lighted up fires and the smoke went out through the volcano's mouth so it appeared to be still active, but also suspected that those smoke signals were used to communicate with someone who was outside the island.

After these explanations characters decided to rest in the small cell, so after they organized guard shifts (and Meler got the first one) they arranged to rest as best they could given the circumstances...

And was in that moment, while his comrades slept, when Meler began to feel a disturbing anxiety and experience blurry visions of a full moon as well as he seemed to hear some far away howls... Using his mystical skills Meler got into a deep concentration and then he remembered something that had gone unnoticed, because whlie he faced the werewolf in session #17 the creature achieved to bit him, so he soon knew that the curse of lycanthropy would begin to affect him immediately and without irremediably...

Knowing about the danger to his companions when the beast claim his being he immediately awoke them and explined what was happening asking then to get him tightly bound and flle leaving him inside the small cell, something they quickly did because the prospect of being attacked by a werewolf with the capabilities of his comrade was something they didn't like too much...


But their plans didn't worked as well as they thought, because Meler soon get transformed, broke out of the ropes used to tie him up and began beating up the cell's door, so Theia, Luna, Flynn and the two surviving prisoners began to run like hell to hide in the pantry looted by giant rats in the previous session while thinking about waht to do because they already knew that the door wouldn't held any longer.


And here you will see how sometimes players' ideas could be “foolish and dangerous” (as one of them said) because they invented something they called lycanthrope rodeo which deserves an explanation:

The matter is they know Meler's character (under my control due to his lupine fury 🐺) is very dangerous and had decided to try to knock him out to see if he can be healed (these players 😅...), so their plan consisted in leaving some smelly remains of meat in fron of the pantry's door and, while he eats these, Luna would use a lasso rope to try to catch him and immobilize his body while Theia would climb upon Meler and tried to choke him puting both arms arond the neck so he finally could fall unconscious and they could tie him up again while Flynn stayed tuned to beat him with his whip (yes he carries a whip as part of his belongings).

And how this worked? Well, not as good as they would have liked, because Meler, with a certain degree of self-control and tempted by the meat in front of the pantry, began to eat it, Luna was able to throw the lasso and Theia climbed over the moonstruck mystic to knock him out... But Meler, rebelling and howling with wolf fury, fumbled the attack roll and slipped over the remains of bloody meat falling over Theia and nearly crashing her.

To complicate even more the situation a troop of 5 goblins and 10 orcs appeared drawn by the noise and the howls and didn't hesitate to join the brawl. In the resulting fight Meler quickly finished 3 goblins and was ready to do the same with their comrades, but then someone (and it wasn't me 😉) decided it was time to do something, so suddenly the orcs and the goblins began to bleed from the mouth, nose and eyes before falling dead and Meler seemed to have a little headache due to what just happened...

What happened leaved characters a bit puzzled (and there are already a few times with strange events taking plce in this campaign), but all get rushed again because Meler was still under the influence of the beast and soon faced his comrades again with unflattering intentions, so they tried again lycanthrope rodeo and this time Flynn began to sing to Valion's glory (that is, he used the spell clerical Sing) and the goodness and power of the god began to fill the hearts of Luna and Theia, although the cleric suffered an attack from Meler and, being wounded, had to cast the spell again. This divine help allowed Theia to tie him up again and give a blow that left him unconscious after the second attempt.

After this they decided to go back to the mercs' cell and after dragging Meler inside the cubicle they saw how he regained his human form.
