Black Box: La Llamada de los dioses - Session 18

As always remember you may find spoilers, so if you are playing the campaign or think about playing it you probably do not want to read more beyond this point (or perhaps you want, who knows).

As I had explained in the previous session the group formed by Luna the half-elf, Meler the mystic and the newcomer Theia, all in the cell where, in previous sessions, they had found and liberated some girls whose fate was to be sacrified to the evil god Penumbra had it not been for the action of the player characters.


It was clear for Meler and Theia that the ocurrence of suddenly appearing in this cell was very strange if you take into account that their last memory was to fell under the attack of orcs.

But before the troubled characters could ask Luna about what happened things get rushed, because they suddenly heared the sound of hurreid steps followed by the cacophony os sounds quickly identified as the noisy voices of orcs rushing to combat...


Because, of course, the character's presence and actions finally have set the alarm in the complex and the monks were mobilizing their forces to face the menaces. It was then when the characters decided to continue exploring the caves and get unnoticed thanks to a pair of monk's tunics they still had, so Meler and Theia decided to disguise themselves and simulate to have Luna as a prisoner, an action which allowed them to go among the monks and hear some conversations with details so significant like the need of protect the orb, the library and the cartographer... (And they do not seem to take much notice of it, I am truly baffled... 😯).

Anyway, players went ahead and returned to the chapel they discovered in the previous session, and encountered a group of 4 clerics and 2 ogres they ended up facing in combat in which the evil followers of Penumbra were about to defeat them, because Theia and Meler starred some big fumbles involving falling to the ground and being at the mercy of their enemies and their spells (Theia got paralyzed by one of those), luckily Luna was very helpful avoiding a bad ending tnaks an attack whith a critical outcome.


After getting rid of their enemies the group decided to go ahead with the exploration... Although in this case it's a misnomer, because in fact retraced their steps and went back to the level above (yes, I'm still baffled 😯) to investigate the tunnel they discovered in session #12 which Grognak (David's character, one of the players taking part in the campaign not long ago) said it was full of creatures he named as "shriekers" (creatures wich begin to moan as little children if you get too close). Getting into the darkness of this tunnel they soon saw a stair going up to the upper level and some big whitish fungi, some even one meter high, reaching them began the small noises which quickly became bereaved cries...

Of course this attracted the attention of the orcs and the ogre guards upstairs, who quickly went down to confront the characters, but luckily they had a plan for them, because Meler climbed up the walls of the tunnel to surprise the orcs falling unto them and Theia hid into the shadows to attack from behind one of the orcs (achieving to kill him with a clean and accurate blow implying she had some above average competences) while Luna used her bow accurately.

After defeating the ogre and the other orcs they went up the steps sculpted in rock to reach the upper room an begin to explore the chambers carved into the rock, discovering what turned out to be a pantry that was being sacked by giant rats, which didn't hesitate to attack them at the prospect of nibbing fresh meat instead of rotting food. So the characters ran away and went into a tunnel running along a lava abbys while fighting against the rats and killing half of them, reaching a door quickly opened by Theia, with the group sheltering inside a room while Meler was blocking the door using his strength and listening the animals' crazed screams, identyfing some of what they were saying with the words "hunger" and "food" (yes, his class level already allows him to understand animals).

And what is this hovel? Well, it's a filthy cubicle covered with straw and dirt in which lie two shadows which, when seeing some light, weakly lifted their heads to show their glassy eyes looking at players characters asking for clemency.
